The questions in Paper-I are mainly on general knowledge and research aptitude, as it is intended to test the teaching and research capabilities of a candidate. Along with these, candidates’ cognitive abilities like comprehension, analysis, understanding the structure of arguments and deductive, evaluation and inductive reasoning are also measured. UGC NET candidates should be aware of their surroundings like the interaction between people, environment and natural resources and their impact on lives.

Below table will explain the distribution of marks in each category.

 Note:

  • Each section has 5 questions, each of which carries 2 marks. Hence 10 marks from each section.

  • There is no negative marking in the exam.

  • Paper-I has 50 questions in a total of 100 marks within a duration of 1 hour.

4. Communication

5. Reasoning (Includes Mathematics)

  • Number series; letter series; codes

  • Relationships; classification

6. Logical Reasoning

  • Understanding the structure of arguments

  • Evaluating and distinguishing deductive and inductive reasoning

  • Verbal analogies: Word analogy — an Applied analogy

  • Verbal classification

  • Reasoning Logical Diagrams: Simple diagrammatic relationship multi-diagrammatic relationshipVenn diagram; Analytical Reasoning

7. Data Interpretation

  • Sources, acquisition and interpretation of data

  • Quantitative and qualitative data

 8. Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
